Looking at Trump and Seeing Ourselves

"We must reject the fiction that Trump’s appeal lies not in his bigotry, racism, and xenophobia, but in his promise to restore lost jobs and lost homes and to curb terrorism. Trump has no viable solutions for these problems. He has only Mexican and Muslim scapegoats on whom to blame them — along with the arrogant and ludicrous claim that if we put him behind the wheel, “It will be great. Trust me.”"

“Trump’s appeal is an indictment of the public education system of America, and the American cultivation of an anti-intellectual culture suspicious of eloquence and learnedness. It dates back to the 1950s when many American voters mocked and derided Adlai Stevenson as an “egghead,” as if having an educational pedigree was a liability. It is important to remember that Stevenson’s populist opponent was Dwight Eisenhower, a former general whose rhetoric reads like Shakespeare in comparison to the childlike incoherence of the average Trump speech.”

Did Donald Trump Just Out-Stupid Himself On Twitter?

"Does he not know that 51 percent is higher than 49 percent? It’s certainly possible. But perhaps this is part of a broader campaign strategy. During a phone interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Trump candidly admitted that he was losing to Clinton in the polls, while suggesting he had room for improvement. “I’m four down in one poll, three and a half in another that just came out, and I haven’t started yet,” he said. In true Trump fashion, even when he’s losing, he spins it as a victory. "

"The incident is a symptom of a problem more serious than terrorism: the lack of effective gun control in the U.S. As I have reported previously, between 1970 and 2007, a total of 3,292 people in the U.S. were killed by terrorists, resulting in an annual risk of one in 3.5 million. Almost all those deaths occurred on a single day, 9/11/01. In contrast, more than 32,000 Americans are shot to death every year, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Of those, more than 11,000 people are murdered and almost 20,000 kill themselves. The U.S., which has more firearms per capita than any other nation, has rates of gun-related killings much higher than any other developed nation."

Thousands fleeing Fallujah, crossing the Euphrates river

I learned from Rabbi Alex that Fallujah was a major center of Talmudic development. From Wikipedia: "Pumbedita Academy was active for about 800 years over the course of the eras of the Amora, Savoraim, and Geonim up until the days of Hai Gaon. The city of Pumbedita was previously settled by Jews for a long time before the academy's establishment, since the days of Second Temple of Jerusalem. Pumbedita was situated on the banks of the Bedita, a stream of the Euphrates, and thus it was named Pumbedita. The modern-day city of Fallujah stands in its place."
