Sad. And there are no simple solutions. And neither political party in the USA will even admit that there is a widespread problem. And both racism (or equivalently groupism) and its denial are common in all political systems worldwide. The chattering classes will cite many anecdotes to deny the problem - but the plural of anecdote is not data. And there is no reason not to start a sentence with "and".
