“It is our knowledge — the things we are sure of — that makes the world go wrong and keeps us from seeing and learning,” Lincoln Steffens wrote in his beautiful 1925 essay. Piercingly true as this may be, we’ve known at least since Plato’s famous Allegory of the Cave that “most people are not just comfortable in their ignorance, but hostile to anyone who points it out.” — This explains the comments war on the Internet.

In College and Hiding From Scary Ideas

Eric Posner, a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, wrote on Slate last month that although universities cosset students more than they used to, that’s what they have to do, because today’s undergraduates are more puerile than their predecessors. “Perhaps overprogrammed children engineered to the specifications of college admissions offices no longer experience the risks and challenges that breed maturity,” he wrote. But “if college students are children, then they should be protected like children.” What happens when they leave college and encounter reality?

War with Iran is probably our best option

Despite my general rational and liberal bias, this is probably almost correct. However, a limited war is not rational alternative. There have been multiple limited wars since 1945. In no significant case has the US emerged a a victor. The thought that air strikes against known targets could succeed is just wishful thinking. Winning a war means the total subjugation of the enemy. In the case of a war with Iran it means more than destroying a few nuclear facilities, or just a few million boots on the ground. It most likely requires nuclear annihilation of large swaths of the Middle East that have any remnants of Shiite sympathy, followed by an overwhelming force of boots on the ground. The US would need to do what Nazi Germany did to Europe, or what Japan did in the East before WWII - and then hope that that a powerful force (like China or Russia) would not take the opportunity to retaliate against the US, both in the Middle East and on US soil. I do not believe that the US electorate has the stomach for that, despite the posturing of the right wing pols. So, it may be our best option - but it is not going to happen. We must take our second best option - keep negotiating.

Review: 'The Passenger' by Lyric Opera

A review of the Chicago production: "At once a commemoration of Auschwitz and an allegory for postwar Germany's coming to terms with its past, "The Passenger" is unflinching in what it has to say but is never maudlin – it plays to our humanity rather than our tear ducts. The ending brings no easy answers, no sentimental reconciliation. We are not told how to feel about the characters or the ugly history that shadows their present. We are only asked never to forget." As a side note, the set designer (who died recently) was South African. I listened to some of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's other music on Spotify this morning. He has some very interesting stuff.

A Trip to Iran

"Many (every single one I met) young Iranians feel deeply embarrassed by their government, and the way the nation is perceived abroad. Zac Clayton, a British cyclist who will finish a round-the-world cycle on March 23 described Iran as having the kindest people of any country he cycled through. "I found most Iranians -- particularly the younger generation -- to be very aware of the world around them... with a burning desire for the freedoms they feel they are being denied by an out of touch, ultra-conservative religious elite.""

A Message To Netanyahu From An American Liberal - mindy-fischer-writer

Bibi is a fear-monger whose alternative to negotiation seems to be - nothing. "After all, we still remember when you first warned us that it was inescapable that “Iran was 3-5 years from a nuclear bomb”….but we also remember that you said that in 1992. And not to pile on here, but another reason that you have a serious credibility issue is because we can’t forget that you are the same man who testified before Congress claiming with all certainty that Saddam Hussein definitely had weapons of mass destruction."
