Media Matters for America

He is almost right. Judaism had Church and State forcibly separated first by the exile to Babylon and reinforced by subsequent Greek and Roman occupations. Christianity separated Church and State during the Enlightenment and the Reformation. The confusion of Church with State continues mildly in the UK (in the C of E with the monarch as head of the Church) and the USA (in the political Right, but not in the formal Constitution), but it is not deeply embedded in dogma. Islam has yet to undergo equivalent upheavals. The destruction of the Ottoman Caliphate was a start, but not an end. There is no indication that the ultimate transition when it comes will be less bloody than the earlier separations.
