"We should be distraught at the recent uptick in violent crime. The 473 homicides last year and similar number already this year, prominently covered daily, have taken a terrible toll, especially in some neighborhoods on the South and West sides. But my contemporaries seem to have forgotten that when we were growing up here, playing kick the can in the streets, there were 970 murders (1974) in the city, and when we were raising our kids here there were 943 (1992). From 1994 to the early 2000s, the number of murders was cut almost in half to under 500, where it has stood, almost without exception, for a dozen years"
